Smoking & Wrinkles

A new study has found that middle-aged smokers who have heavily-lined faces have five times the risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as smokers without many wrinkles.

The study, published in Thorax, included 149 middle-aged smokers, including 68 with COPD. The participant's faces were ranked according to the number and severity of facial wrinkles, and 25 were considered to have "widespread wrinkling." Almost all of these patients also had COPD.

The researchers suggest that this data shows that wrinkling and lung disease share a common pathway in the body. Therefore, if you easily wrinkle, you may also get lung disease more easily.

Overuse of steroid creams for eczema can create stretch marks

While steroid creams and ointments are a quick and successful way to treat eczema, there can be a tendency to overuse the medication. People tend to apply the treatments more often or for longer than their doctor recommends.

Then they face the side effects, which can include unattractive stretch marks on the skin where the treatment is applied. These are permanent and will not disappear over time.

What kind of sun protection should I wear?

The most important concept is that nothing is more important than simply avoiding the sun. if you cannot avoid the sun, apply sunscreen, but nothing is going to be as good a protection. Sunscreen is never going to be as good as being outside from the sun. So the number one recommendation is avoid the sun, and on top of that, apply sunscreen.
